What we do
The best xeriscape designs for Phoenix layer three heights. Canopy shade trees — mesquite, palo verde, ironwood, desert willow — cut afternoon air temps 15–20°F under the canopy. Understory shrubs and structural plants — agave, Texas sage, red bird of paradise, hop bush — hold form through summer. Living groundcovers or tall grasses — dymondia, myoporum, deer grass, muhly — replace the "sea of decomposed granite" that makes a lot of Phoenix front yards look like a driveway.
Design process
- Site walk — soil, drainage, sun exposure, sight lines, existing plants worth keeping.
- Plant palette + concept plan — a scaled drawing you can react to before anything is dug.
- Revisions — usually two rounds. What you approve is what gets planted.
- Install — plants sourced from wholesale nurseries we vet, delivered fresh, planted the same week.
- Warranty — one year on trees and shrubs when we handle the irrigation on the same job.
Shade
Nothing changes a Phoenix backyard like shade. We design in canopy tree groupings, ramadas, pergolas, and shade sails — sized and oriented for the summer afternoon sun, not the winter one. Layered shade (canopy + structure + fabric) is what turns a 115°F patio into one you'll sit on with iced tea.
Water math
A properly designed desert landscape uses 40–60% less water than a turf lawn once established (18–24 months). Native and desert-adapted species handle Phoenix's 110°F summers without supplemental irrigation once their roots are down. We design so the irrigation controller can back off, year over year, as plants mature.

$250 for a site walk and concept plan, credited to install.
Mostly. We lean on natives and desert-adapted species — but a well-placed non-native (bougainvillea, olives, citrus) earns its water.
Xeriscape is layered planting designed for low water. Rockscape is a driveway pretending to be a yard. We do the first.
Not the way we design. Three-height planting reads as lush as anything with a lawn — see the gallery.
