Why generic schedules don't work in Phoenix

The rule everybody hears is "water 15 minutes, three times a week." That's an average that fits nobody. A spray head puts down water at four times the rate of a rotor. A rotor puts down at three times the rate of an R-VAN. Run them all the same 15 minutes and one lawn floods and one lawn browns.

The right question is: what heads do I have, what's my soil intake rate, and what's the season? Here's the answer.

Spray heads (fixed spray, ~40 gph per 1,000 sq ft)

Spray heads throw high-volume in a short window. In Phoenix caliche soil, running them long enough to soak deep means runoff and puddles. Cycle-and-soak is mandatory.

• Summer (May–Sep): 8–10 minutes on, 30–60 minutes off, then a second cycle. 3–4x per week.
• Shoulder (Mar–Apr, Oct): 6–8 minutes, 2 cycles, 3x per week.
• Winter (Nov–Feb): 5–7 minutes, 1 cycle, 2x per week. Overseeded rye may want more.

Rotors (gear-drive, 15–25 gph per 1,000 sq ft)

Rotors put down water slower and more evenly. You can run them longer per cycle before you get runoff.

• Summer: 20–30 minutes per cycle, 1–2 cycles per run day, 3–4x per week.
• Shoulder: 15–20 minutes, 1 cycle, 3x per week.
• Winter: 12–15 minutes, 1 cycle, 2x per week.

R-VAN and rotary nozzles (0.6 in/hr matched precip)

R-VAN and rotary MP nozzles are matched-precipitation — the slowest, most even, most water-efficient of the three. This is what we install on new work. Run times are longer per cycle but far more efficient overall.

• Summer: 12–15 minutes per cycle, 2 cycles per run day, 3x per week.
• Shoulder: 10–12 minutes, 2 cycles, 3x per week.
• Winter: 8–10 minutes, 1 cycle, 2x per week.

Phoenix caliche — the reason cycle-and-soak exists

Caliche is calcium-carbonate hardpan. It has almost zero water intake rate. A long single-run watering sheets off the caliche layer, runs to the curb, and doesn't reach the root zone. Cycle-and-soak splits your watering into shorter bursts with soak windows between so water actually infiltrates. If you see puddles or runoff, your per-cycle time is too long. Cut it in half and add a cycle.

Why not water every day?

Daily watering trains roots to stay shallow — there's always surface moisture, so roots never dive. Shallow-rooted lawn browns in a heatwave, dies in a power outage, and dies for real in a summer haboob. Deep, infrequent watering trains roots 6–12 inches down where soil holds moisture between cycles. Every summer we take over customers who watered daily for a decade and can't understand why their lawn died. Their lawn didn't die. Its roots did — years ago.

How to tell what heads you have

• Spray: fan-shaped, fixed spray, wets the whole radius at once. Pop-ups usually 2–4".
• Rotor: single rotating stream, back-and-forth or full circle. Pop-ups usually 4–6".
• R-VAN / rotary nozzle: multiple thin rotating streams, "spider" pattern. Fits on standard spray body.
